How to plan trips during your Erasmus

Last updated: 13 Oct 2026

The easiest way to plan trips during an Erasmus semester is to make a small group of the people who actually want to go, choose weekends around lectures and exams together, keep to cheap destinations reachable by bus, train or low cost flight, and track shared costs from the first euro, because in a mixed group people come and go and pay in different currencies. 4trips is free and works in English, Italian and German, so the whole group can plan in one place.

Make a group for each trip

The big Erasmus chat is great for ideas and terrible for decisions. Once a trip has a few real takers, make a small 4trips group for it and share the invite link. Everyone joins with their own account from the browser, nothing to install.

Pick dates around the timetable

Lectures, labs and exam sessions differ for everyone in a mixed group. Each person marks the days they are free and 4trips shows the windows where most people can go; the organizer locks the dates. Long weekends and the breaks between semesters are the obvious windows.

Go cheap and close

  • Look at what is near your host city first: night buses, regional trains and student discounts make short trips very cheap.
  • Low cost flights are cheapest when booked early and with cabin bags only.
  • Hostels with private rooms for four to six people often beat apartments for a weekend.
  • Many museums in Europe are free or discounted for students under 26 with an ID.

Put your budget and "student trip" in the survey and 4trips will suggest destinations that fit, with an estimated cost per person. For ideas, look at our sample 3 days in Prague or 4 days in Lisbon.

Split costs across currencies

An Erasmus group in Poland, Czechia or Sweden pays in złoty, crowns and euro on the same trip. In 4trips each expense can be entered in the currency it was paid in and is converted to the trip currency at the European Central Bank rate of the day. Balances update straight away, and the app suggests the fewest transfers to settle up before everyone flies home.

Frequently asked questions

Is 4trips free for students?

4trips is free for everyone at the moment. There is no student plan because there is nothing to pay.

Can friends from different countries use it in their own language?

Partly: the app is available in English, Italian and German, and each person chooses their language. Members who speak other languages usually use English.

What if someone joins the group after the trip is created?

They can open the trip and read everything straight away, and join it with one click to add their availability, vote and share costs.
