6 days in Interlaken with friends: hikes, lakes and adrenaline
- Hiking

- Sports
Six days around Interlaken is enough for the best of the Jungfrau region at full speed: a waterfall valley, car-free mountain villages, a ridge hike to an alpine lake, the railway to the Jungfraujoch, a canyoning morning and an afternoon on the turquoise lakes. It is expensive: mountain railways make up most of the cost, so look at a regional pass before you go. Without any pass, budget around €1,050 per person on the ground before travel and accommodation; a Half Fare Card or the Jungfrau Travel Pass cuts that a lot.

When to go
Mid June to mid September for hiking: the high trails are free of snow and every lift runs. July and August are warmest and busiest. In late spring and autumn some lifts close for maintenance; from December the same region becomes a ski trip.
Getting there & staying
AI suggestions: search and book on the linked sitesFly into Zurich (ZRH) or Geneva (GVA), then the direct train to Interlaken Ost
From Zurich airport the trip takes about 2 hours 15 minutes with one change in Bern; from Geneva about 3 hours. From Milan, a direct train via the Lötschberg reaches Spiez in about 2.5 hours. Swiss trains run like clockwork, so there is no need for a car.

Every mountain railway in this plan starts at Interlaken Ost, and the town has the region's cheapest beds and most places to eat out in the evening. Lauterbrunnen is a quieter alternative for a group that wants mountain views from the window.

Frequently asked questions
Which pass is best for Interlaken?
It depends on how many mountains you ride. For this plan the Jungfrau Travel Pass usually works out cheapest, since it covers First, Harder Kulm, the lake boats and a big discount on the Jungfraujoch. The Swiss Half Fare Card halves almost everything and also pays off if you arrive by train.
Is the Jungfraujoch worth it?
On a clear day, yes: the Aletsch Glacier and the view from 3,454 m are unique. In cloud you see nothing, so watch the webcams and keep that day flexible.
Do we need hiking experience?
No. Every walk here is on marked, well-kept paths. Good shoes, a rain jacket and sun protection are enough; canyoning and paragliding are guided.
