How to split travel expenses with friends
Last updated: 13 Oct 2026
The fairest way to split travel expenses with friends is to agree the rules before you leave, log every shared expense as soon as it is paid, split each one only between the people it was for, and settle up at the end with as few transfers as possible. A shared ledger does the maths for you; in 4trips it sits inside the trip itself, next to the plan and the chat, and converts other currencies at the official daily rate.
Agree the rules before you go
- Shared by everyone: accommodation, the rental car, fuel, tolls, the group shopping.
- Shared by those who take part: activities, dinners out, drinks.
- Personal: souvenirs, your own snacks, anything only you wanted.
Say it once in the group chat before the trip and most arguments never happen.
Log expenses as they happen
The receipts you mean to add later are the ones that cause trouble. In 4trips anyone in the trip can add an expense in a few seconds: what it was, how much, who paid and who it is split between. Everyone sees the same list and the same balances straight away, and the person who paid or the organizer can fix a mistake.
Split by who was there
Not every cost is for everyone. When you add an expense, tick only the people it was for: the four who went on the boat trip, everyone except the person who skipped dinner. In 4trips each expense is split equally among the people you tick; if you need uneven shares (one person had the expensive room), add it as separate expenses.
Handle different currencies
On a trip through Switzerland, Czechia or Croatia, people pay in francs, crowns and euro. Pick one trip currency at the start. In 4trips you can enter each expense in the currency you actually paid, and it is converted at the European Central Bank rate of that day, with the original amount kept for reference.
Settle up with the fewest transfers
At the end, nobody wants to make ten small transfers. 4trips works out each person's balance and suggests the smallest set of payments that brings everyone to zero. You pay each other by bank transfer, PayPal or cash, then mark the payment as done so the balances update; a recorded payment can be undone if it was a mistake.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a fee to split expenses in 4trips?
No. 4trips is free, there is no limit on the number of expenses, and 4trips never handles the money itself.
Can we split an expense unevenly?
Not by amount or percentage. Each expense is split equally among the people you choose; for uneven shares, add separate expenses.
How is this different from Splitwise?
Splitwise is a separate app whose free plan caps expenses per day and keeps currency conversion for Pro. 4trips has unlimited expenses and free currency conversion, inside the trip next to the dates, itinerary and chat. See our [comparison with Splitwise and WhatsApp](compare:splitwise-whatsapp).
