12 days on Iceland's Ring Road with friends: a road trip itinerary
- Nature
- Roadtrip

- Wildlife
Twelve days is the right length to drive the full Ring Road, about 1,350 km, with time for the detours that make it worthwhile: the Golden Circle, the south coast, the glacier lagoon, the East Fjords, the geothermal north and the Snæfellsnes peninsula. The plan goes anticlockwise, with three to four hours of driving on most days. Iceland is expensive and a group saves the most by sharing a car and cooking some meals. Count on roughly €1,640 per person on the ground, including a quarter of the car and fuel, before flights and accommodation.

When to go
Drive the Ring Road from June to early September: long daylight, open roads and puffins until mid August. May and late September work with more weather risk. In winter many sections of the route, especially in the east and north, are slow or closed by snow, and the trip suits a shorter south coast loop instead.
Getting there & staying
AI suggestions: search and book on the linked sitesFly into Keflavík (KEF) and pick up a rental car at the airport
A normal car is enough for the paved Ring Road and every stop in this plan in summer; you only need a 4x4 for the highland F-roads, which this route avoids. Add gravel protection to the insurance and fill up whenever you see a station in the east.
Rooms with a shared kitchen · Guesthouses and cottages along the route
Beds along the Ring Road are limited in the east and north, so book every night before you go. A kitchen saves a lot: supermarkets like Bónus and Krónan are far cheaper than restaurants.

Frequently asked questions
Do we need a 4x4 for the Ring Road?
Not in summer. The Ring Road and every stop in this plan are on paved or well-kept gravel roads. A 4x4 is only required on the F-roads into the highlands.
Is twelve days enough for the whole Ring Road?
Yes, with three to four hours of driving most days. Ten days is possible but rushed; with fourteen you can add the Westfjords or a highland day.
Which lagoon should we choose?
The Blue Lagoon is the most famous and fits neatly before a flight; Sky Lagoon has the ocean view and the sauna ritual; Mývatn and the Secret Lagoon are smaller and cheaper. Most groups pick one or two.
